Before glue, before tweezers, before the lash band ever touches the lid—there must be a plan. And not just any plan. A map.

Practice Lab 1 is about developing this foundational discipline. With lash shape mapping, artists move beyond improvisation and start designing lashes with purpose, precision, and symmetry.

Lash shape mapping is the visual planning of lash placement, lengths, density, and curl—based on the client’s eye shape, lid structure, and desired outcome.

Think of it like sketching a blueprint before constructing a building.

Lash length (short to long transitions)

Fiber density (thick vs airy areas)

Curl intensity and positioning

Start and end points of the lash

Adjustments for asymmetry or hooding

Bouba World Insight: If you wouldn't freestyle a haircut, don’t freestyle a lash.

To complete Practice Lab 1, you’ll need:

Face charts or lash design templates (Bouba World recommends laminated ones for reuse)

Fine-tip pen or pencil

Ruler or lash divider

Reference images of real eye shapes

Optional: colored markers for curl and density zones

You can also print side-by-side eye shape variations (almond, round, hooded, downturned, monolid) to simulate custom client scenarios.

Look at the eye’s contour and structure:

Is it round, almond, hooded, monolid, or downturned?

Are there symmetry issues between left and right eyes?

Is the crease deep or shallow?

Mark these observations on the face chart.

Divide the lash line into:

Inner third (delicate, short fibers)

Center third (support curl and lift)

Outer third (length or lift, depending on eye shape)

Label zones: 1, 2, 3.

Using numerical indicators (e.g., 8mm to 13mm), draw lash length progression across the zones. Keep in mind:

Round eyes need elongation at the outer edge

Hooded eyes need shorter fibers under the brow bone

Almond eyes handle balanced lengths with a slight center lift

Mark curls using codes (e.g., J, C, D). Decide:

Where to use natural curl (J/C) for realism

Where to place dramatic lift (D curl) for visibility or correction

Color-code curl zones if helpful.

Use hash marks or shading to indicate fiber volume. For example:

Light shading = airy, natural lash

Heavy shading = dramatic or editorial look

Mixed = hybrid or texture blend

Review for symmetry, balance, and effectiveness based on the mapped eye shape. Add client notes like:

“Avoid long center spikes”

“Add corner lift for downturned shape”

“Reduce inner poke risk with shorter base”

First pass: map both eyes in 15 minutes

By week two: map in under 10 minutes

With experience: map on sight in under 5 minutes
